How to watch safely – 26 January 2028

  • Sunset does not make it safe

The eclipse ends as the Sun sets over Portugal and Spain. Even near the horizon, direct sunlight can harm your eyes.

  • No unprotected viewing during the ring

In an annular eclipse the Sun is never fully covered. Glasses marked ISO 12312-2 must stay on the whole time.

  • Photograph with a filter

A sunset with a ring of light is a popular shot. Keep a solar filter on the lens until the Sun is almost at the horizon.

  • Project onto a wall

A pinhole in a piece of card can cast an image of the ring onto a white wall, ideal when the Sun is low.
