Why does day length vary through the year?

Earth's axis is tilted about 23.4 degrees. When one hemisphere faces the sun it gets long days and summer, while the other gets short days and winter. The further a place is from the equator, the bigger the difference between summer and winter.

Why are days almost equal near the equator?

Near the equator the sun stays high in the sky all year. Cities like Singapore, Nairobi and Quito get about 12 hours of daylight every day, and sunrise happens at nearly the same time year round.

What is the midnight sun?

North of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle the sun does not set for a period around the summer solstice. This happens in places such as northern Scandinavia, Iceland, Alaska and Antarctica.

What is polar night?

Polar night is the opposite: the sun does not rise above the horizon. It occurs at the same latitudes as the midnight sun, but in winter. Around midday there is often still some twilight.

How is sunrise calculated?

Sunrise and sunset are when the upper edge of the sun crosses the horizon. The calculation uses the location's latitude and longitude and accounts for refraction of light in the atmosphere. Mountains, buildings and altitude can shift it by a few minutes.

When are the longest and shortest days?

In the northern hemisphere the longest day is around 21 June and the shortest around 21 December. In the southern hemisphere, for example in Sydney or Buenos Aires, it is exactly the opposite.

What are twilight and dawn?

Even when the sun is below the horizon it is not immediately dark. Civil twilight lasts until the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon, nautical until 12 degrees and astronomical until 18 degrees. Far from the equator twilight can last for hours, while near the equator it lasts only minutes.

Why is the sun not highest at 12 o'clock?

A time zone covers a wide area, but the sun's position differs from east to west within it. Many countries also move their clocks forward an hour in summer. That is why the sun is often highest some time after 12:00, and in some cities much later.

Daylight and health

Lack of daylight can affect sleep, mood and energy, especially in places with dark winters. Getting outside around midday when the light is strongest helps, and light therapy lamps are common in northern countries. During bright summer nights, blackout curtains can help with sleep.
