The breaks of the school year

Sports break (sportlov)

The sports break is one week in February or March. Municipalities spread it between week 7 and week 10 so that ski resorts, trains and roads to the mountains are not full in the same week. The section Next break in each municipality further down shows which week each municipality has.

Easter break (påsklov)

The Easter break falls around Easter: the week before Easter Sunday, the week after, or around Easter Monday. Easter moves between late March and late April, so the break lands in a different week each year. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays and do not count as break days.

Autumn break (höstlov)

The autumn break is nearly always in week 44, around All Saints' weekend. It is the break that differs least between municipalities. Some schools add a study day next to it, which makes the time off longer.

Christmas break (jullov)

The Christmas break starts when the autumn term ends, usually a few days before Christmas Eve, and lasts until the spring term starts after Epiphany. Its length depends on how the weekends fall. Many municipalities only publish term dates. We then work out the break and mark it as calculated.

Summer break (sommarlov)

The summer break is the longest break, about ten weeks. It starts when the spring term ends, usually on a Friday in mid-June just before Midsummer, and lasts until the autumn term starts in mid or late August. The exact first and last day differ slightly between municipalities and are listed in each municipality's school calendar.

Good to know when planning time off

  • If you want to travel outside the breaks, you need to apply for leave from the school. The head teacher decides and may say no, for example during national tests.
  • Mountain cabins and trains during the sports break weeks are often booked far ahead. Check your municipality's week before booking.
  • If you live in one municipality and go to school in another, the school's municipality decides, or the independent school's own calendar.
  • After-school care (fritids) is usually open during breaks, but many require you to register the need a few weeks ahead.

How we collect and check the dates

Where do the dates come from?

All dates come from each municipality's own page about school term dates for compulsory school. We do not copy other sites' lists or reuse earlier years. Below the table there is a link to the source, so you can see where the date is written.

How are the dates checked?

When a break is added, the line of text on the municipality's page that the date is based on is saved. A date is only published if that line appears word for word on the municipality's page, under the right term and year. If the municipality only gives a week number, such as week 44, we convert it to Monday–Friday of that week. If there is no separate Christmas break listed, it is worked out from the last day of the autumn term and the first day of the spring term. Such dates are marked as calculated.

How often is the page updated?

An automatic check goes through the municipalities' pages every ten days and looks for breaks that are still missing. Breaks that are already over are not looked for. Dates already on the page are not overwritten automatically. If a municipality changes a break afterwards, we correct it by hand.

When do municipalities publish new term dates?

Most municipalities decide their term dates one to two years ahead, often in spring. So the next school year may be missing for a while for some municipalities. If no date is shown for a break, the municipality has not published it yet, or we have not been able to confirm it.

Why do municipalities have different breaks?

Each municipality decides its own breaks. The sports break is spread between week 7 and week 10 depending on where in Sweden you live, partly so the ski resorts are not full the same week. The autumn break is almost always week 44, and the Easter break is around Easter or the week after.

How many school days are in a school year?

According to the Swedish School Ordinance, the school year has at least 178 school days and 12 days off. It starts in August and ends in June. Days off that are not part of the main breaks are often single days, for example around Ascension Day.

Do the dates apply to independent schools and upper secondary?

The dates apply to the municipality's compulsory schools. Independent schools set their own term dates and may have other breaks. Upper secondary schools often follow the same breaks, but not always. Study days, when pupils are off but teachers work, are set by each school and are not listed here.
