How are week numbers counted in Sweden?

Sweden follows the international standard ISO 8601. The week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday. Week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year, which also means it always contains 4 January. So the first days of January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year, and the last days of December can belong to week 1 of the next year.

Why do some years have 53 weeks?

A normal year has 52 weeks and one day, and a leap year 52 weeks and two days. Those extra days add up, so roughly every five to six years there is a week 53. It happens when a year starts on a Thursday, or when a leap year starts on a Wednesday. 2026 is one of those years and has 53 weeks.

Why do Swedes use week numbers?

In Sweden week numbers are part of everyday life in a way that is rare elsewhere. Schools announce holidays by week, like the winter sports break in week 8 or 9 and the autumn break in week 44. Construction, transport and industry plan deliveries by week, and many people talk about their summer holiday as weeks 28 to 31. A week number is shorter and clearer than a date range.

Do week numbers differ between countries?

Yes. The Nordic countries and most of Europe use ISO weeks just like Sweden. In the USA, Canada and parts of Asia the week starts on Sunday instead, and week 1 is the week containing 1 January. The same date can therefore have different week numbers in Sweden and in the USA. When booking with colleagues abroad, writing out the date is the safest choice.
