What is a name day?

A name day is the day in the calendar that belongs to a first name. In many countries it is an old and well-loved tradition to mark it with congratulations, flowers or something sweet. In some places people celebrate their name day almost as much as their birthday.

Where do name days come from?

The tradition has its roots in the medieval calendar of saints, where every day was dedicated to a saint. Over time countries kept or replaced the names in different ways, and today each country has its own list reflecting local naming history.

Who decides the names in the calendar?

It varies. In some countries an academy, a university or an authority maintains the official list, while elsewhere it follows the church calendar or long tradition. Lists are often reviewed so that new, common names can be added.

Why do some days have no name?

Some days have no name day because they are dedicated to a holiday or a special event, such as New Year's Day or Christmas Day. The leap day on 29 February often has no name either.

My name is missing, when is my name day?

No list contains every name. A common solution is to celebrate on the day of a similar name, such as a variant with a different spelling or the original form of your name. Try searching for several variants.
