About the school breaks in Göteborg 2026

The autumn term 2026 for primary schools in Gothenburg begins on August 17 and ends on December 18. The autumn break, officially known as läslov or reading break, takes place during week 44. It runs from Monday, October 26, to Friday, October 30, providing five calendar days off for the students. Parents should keep in mind that individual schools may schedule additional staff training days during the term. Beyond the autumn break, students have a Christmas break that starts on Saturday, December 19, 2026, and lasts until Sunday, January 10, 2027. This period spans 23 calendar days, covering from week 51 through week 1. Independent schools and upper secondary schools may follow a different schedule compared to the municipal primary schools. These dates are sourced from the official academic calendar of the City of Gothenburg, but you should always check with your child’s specific school to confirm their schedule.

About Göteborg

Gothenburg is Sweden's second city, located where the Göta älv river flows into the Kattegat. Its schools range from the inner city to the southern archipelago, where pupils on islands such as Styrsö and Donsö take the boat to school. Liseberg and the Universeum science centre sit next to each other and often run special programmes during the winter and autumn breaks.

How we collect and check the dates

Where do the dates come from?

All dates come from each municipality's own page about school term dates for compulsory school. We do not copy other sites' lists or reuse earlier years. Below the table there is a link to the source, so you can see where the date is written.

How are the dates checked?

When a break is added, the line of text on the municipality's page that the date is based on is saved. A date is only published if that line appears word for word on the municipality's page, under the right term and year. If the municipality only gives a week number, such as week 44, we convert it to Monday–Friday of that week. If there is no separate Christmas break listed, it is worked out from the last day of the autumn term and the first day of the spring term. Such dates are marked as calculated.

How often is the page updated?

An automatic check goes through the municipalities' pages every ten days and looks for breaks that are still missing. Breaks that are already over are not looked for. Dates already on the page are not overwritten automatically. If a municipality changes a break afterwards, we correct it by hand.

When do municipalities publish new term dates?

Most municipalities decide their term dates one to two years ahead, often in spring. So the next school year may be missing for a while for some municipalities. If no date is shown for a break, the municipality has not published it yet, or we have not been able to confirm it.

Why do municipalities have different breaks?

Each municipality decides its own breaks. The sports break is spread between week 7 and week 10 depending on where in Sweden you live, partly so the ski resorts are not full the same week. The autumn break is almost always week 44, and the Easter break is around Easter or the week after.

How many school days are in a school year?

According to the Swedish School Ordinance, the school year has at least 178 school days and 12 days off. It starts in August and ends in June. Days off that are not part of the main breaks are often single days, for example around Ascension Day.

Do the dates apply to independent schools and upper secondary?

The dates apply to the municipality's compulsory schools. Independent schools set their own term dates and may have other breaks. Upper secondary schools often follow the same breaks, but not always. Study days, when pupils are off but teachers work, are set by each school and are not listed here.
