Name days in Denmark
In Denmark it is called navnedag, but the tradition is much weaker than in Sweden and Finland. Few Danes celebrate their name day, even though the days are still printed in many almanacs.
The Danish list is largely based on old saints' days and has not been modernised the way the Swedish one has. That is why you find names like Hilarius on 13 January and Malachias on 5 November, names that are rarely given to children today.

Do Danes celebrate name days?
Not much. Navnedag is not a strong tradition in Denmark, and most people only celebrate their birthday. The names are still printed in many almanacs, and some days live on as holidays because of the name.
Which name days are best known in Denmark?
Sankt Hans on 24 June is the biggest, with bonfires and singing on Midsummer Eve the night before. Morten Bisp on 11 November is behind Mortensaften on 10 November, when many Danes eat duck or goose. Valentinus on 14 February and Lucia on 13 December are also widely recognised.
What does the Danish list look like?
The list shown here has just over 380 names, usually one per day. Many names are in Latin form, such as Carolus, Anshelmus and Venceslaus, because the list is based on the old calendar of saints. Some days carry the name of the holiday instead, such as Nytårsdag and Juledag.
Why are the Danish names so old-fashioned?
Denmark has not modernised its name list the way Sweden and Finland have. In Sweden the Swedish Academy has replaced many rare names with ones used today, while the Danish list still reflects the saints of the medieval church calendar.
My Danish name is missing, when is my name day?
Many common Danish names, such as Mette or Lars, are missing from the old list. Look for the original form, for example Laurentius for Lars, or pick the name closest to your own. Since the tradition is informal in Denmark, you can choose the day yourself.
