The name day is tied to a saint with the same name. Since many names are shared by several saints, one name can have different dates in different calendars, and many people choose which saint they count as their own. That is why several names often share a day.

How is Namenstag celebrated in Germany?
In Catholic parts of the country, especially Bavaria and the Rhineland, people say Alles Gute zum Namenstag. Children used to receive gifts on their name day rather than on their birthday. In the Protestant north the tradition is much weaker.
Why does one name have several name days in Germany?
The German name day follows the saints, and many saints share a name. Johannes, for example, appears on eleven different days in the list here, and Maria on six. People usually celebrate the saint they were baptised after, or the date closest to their birthday.
How many names are in the German calendar?
The list shown here has just over 1,100 entries and about 850 different names. Most days have three or four names. Since no official body maintains name days in Germany, different almanacs can differ.
Which name days are tied to well-known holidays?
Martin on 11 November is Martinstag, when children walk in lantern processions and many people eat goose. Nikolaus on 6 December is when children find sweets in their shoes. Valentin on 14 February and Silvester on 31 December have also given their names to those days.
Do the same name days apply in Austria and Switzerland?
Largely, since the calendar is based on the same Catholic saints. Austria has its own list, which you can choose in the dropdown above, and some dates differ from the German ones. Local saints often have a more prominent place in each country.
