Name days in Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic the name day is called svátek, and many people still mark it. It is common to congratulate colleagues and friends, often with flowers or a small gift.

Unlike Poland and Germany, the Czech calendar mostly has just one name per day. The name is printed in calendars and sometimes mentioned on radio and TV, so it is easy to keep track of who is celebrating.

How is svátek celebrated in the Czech Republic?

People say Všechno nejlepší k svátku, and it is common to give flowers, chocolate or a bottle of wine. At work the person celebrating often treats colleagues. The tradition is alive across all ages.

What does the Czech name list look like?

Almost every day has a single name, which makes the list easy to follow. The list here has 382 entries. Some days carry a holiday instead, and some names share the day with one, such as Štěpán on Boxing Day.

Why do some days show a holiday instead of a name?

The Czech almanac marks state holidays in the same place as the names. 28 October celebrates the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918, 17 November the struggle for freedom and democracy, and 5 July Saints Cyril and Methodius. 8 May is Liberation Day after the Second World War.

Which name day matters most in the Czech Republic?

Václav on 28 September has a special place, since Saint Wenceslas is the country's patron saint and the day is also Czech Statehood Day. Jan on 24 June and Martin on 11 November are other well-known days. On St Martin's Day many people eat goose and taste the first wine of the year.

Is the Slovak calendar the same?

No, Slovakia has its own list, although many names are similar to the Czech ones. Dates often differ, so a Jana can have her name day on different days in the two countries. You can choose Slovakia in the dropdown above to compare.
