Name days in Finland
In Finland the name day is called nimipäivä, and it is celebrated more than in Sweden. It is common to be congratulated at work or school, and someone often brings coffee and cake.
The Finnish-language name list is kept by the University of Helsinki almanac office and is reviewed roughly every five years, when new names can be added. Finland also has a separate list for Finland-Swedish names, so the same day can have different names depending on language. The list shown here is the Finnish-language one.

How are name days celebrated in Finland?
The name day, nimipäivä, is an everyday tradition in Finland. People say Hyvää nimipäivää, happy name day, and at many workplaces the person celebrating brings coffee and buns. Children sometimes get a small gift, and many Finns know which day their name appears in the almanac.
How many names are in the Finnish list?
The Finnish-language list shown here has 574 names. Almost every day has one or a few names, while New Year's Day, Christmas Day and leap day have none. The day with the most names is 24 June, with nine forms of Johannes, including Juhani, Jussi and Jukka.
Why does Midsummer have so many names in Finland?
Midsummer is called juhannus in Finnish, after John the Baptist, whose day is 24 June. That is why nearly every Finnish form of Johannes sits on that date. Someone called Juha or Janne celebrates their name day during the Midsummer holiday.
Who decides the names in the Finnish almanac?
The University of Helsinki almanac office holds the sole right to the Finnish almanac and maintains the list of names. It is reviewed about every five years, when names that have become common among newborns can be added. There are also separate lists for Finland-Swedish, Sámi and Orthodox names.
My name is not in the Finnish list, what can I do?
Search for the Finnish form of your name, for example Matti for Matthew or Liisa for Elizabeth. A Swedish name may be in the Finland-Swedish list instead, which is not shown here. You can also compare with the Swedish list by choosing Sweden in the dropdown.
